MahJong Room / by Erika Chan

For the uninitiated, Mahjong is an ancient and popular Chinese game.
For us here at MahJong Room, it is so much more than a game. It invokes memories of Saturday afternoons spent with the extended family, playing the game against the happy chatter and laughter of children, accompanied by steaming bowls of food.

Mahjong, therefore, is a celebration of family, tradition and culture and the coming together of these over food. Our childhood, our upbringing and these family gatherings inspire the guiding principles behind the restaurant. The many meals we cooked, shared and consumed in our youth represent the elements we want to reflect in the space and the food. Simplicity. Honesty. Joy.

The owners Erika Chan & William Hui work hard to encapsulate the ideas and memories of our childhood to create food that is beautiful, nourishing and wholesome. In keeping with the down-home nature of the restaurant and its food, we work together as a team - on the floor and in the kitchen - as one.

In keeping with these principles, our menu features regional home-style Chinese dishes that are simple and balanced in both flavour and texture. We like clean, distinctive flavours that allow the produce to speak for itself. From light Cantonese and Shanghainese dishes to the signature fire of Szechuan food, we cover varying regions of China .

The surroundings at MahJong Room are as important as its food. The restaurant is furnished with unique and eclectic elements of Chinese décor, creating an intimate and cosy environment. Our dark-wood mahjong tables and antiques are sourced from Shanghai , with other forms of memorabilia, enamelware and retro pieces coming from our private collection.

Above all, Mahjong Room is a soothing, intimate and cosy space. It is a space you can bring your family, your friends, or your lover. It is a space where we want you to share and enjoy our food and hospitality. So let us eat - and play!
